I recently read SCAT by Carl Hiaasen. It was an easy read with fun twists and turns. I always love a book that takes you on an adventure but also gives you real facts along the way. It's like a two-for-one, I am getting to read something I enjoy while also getting educated on the Florida Panther and the Everglades. I love this book so much that I am now onto another book of his: Flushed. I think the reason I am drawn to his books so much is that I also enjoy writing the kind of stories he writes. In fact, he also has a fondness of Hemingway. Like me, his favorite book by him is Old Man and The Sea. Not surprising as it takes place out on the ocean.
As a writer, I find that I learn the most by reading. Reading this book helped light a fire in me that I didn't know needed lit. I was able to narrow down the target audience I would like to write for and the types of stories that would interest me the most. I was torn between writing historical fiction but I see that I find more enjoyment in books like his. I do love historical fiction, but something about the innocence and fun of these kinds of books keeps me coming back.
SCAT and FLUSHED so far are definitely safe for kids to read and educational, as I said before. I wish I had read these when I was younger, who knows I could of become an environmentalist. This is the kind of book you cant really write a review on as any detail could give it away. But I will say: A teacher goes missing in the Everglades, and its up to two kids to find her. That's all you need to know.
If you end up reading SCAT or FLUSHED or have any recommendations for any other books I should read of his, let me know. Feel free to reach out and share with me what helps you on your writing journey.
